Do You Need a Barn Cat?

Dash of dark brown, calico, muddy beige that streaks across the straw from stall to stall, or peers down lazily yellow-eyed from the overhead rafters, awakened from a midday snooze. Rat patrol, consumer of stray bugs, tormenter of field mice and small owls. Big-paw light footed balancer upon the narrow splintered sill of the window where the hay bales get tossed, alert, wary, often feral, leery, hungry. As short-timer as a summer field hand or as devoted as a grizzled ranch boss. Apathetic toward passing humans, sneers at dogs, often adopts foals and colts as dearest friend. Rarely dainty, rarely completely cat-like clean. Ear torn, missing a claw or two. Barn cat.
